O’ Neill’s Land

O’Neill’s Land is the story of a young man, Erin O’Neill, who experiences a couple riveting visitations, precipitated by an old old man whose presence he could not understand. After the second of these visits he finds that the man who he thought was his grandfather was really his father. He is given a book, a chronicle of his father’s life. He finds that his grandfather (father), the patriarch of their family is more than two thousand years old, and it is he who is destined to replace him. He is then sent to Ireland to learn more about his real identity. Upon his return to the States he finds that his girlfriend is pregnant, and now knowing that his family will never accept a child born to anyone outside the family, he has no alternative but to flee. It is a love story and adventure of mounting intrigue.

Though he was raised in a suburb of Milwaukee, Kevin Honeck was born and spent his first seven years in the lake community of Okauchee Wisconsin. For a youngster it was a time and place of mystery and adventure. At five, Kevin and his friend, Sam, left kindergarten, ostensibly to go fishing. Their leaving became permanent. Shortly thereafter, their teacher, an attractive young woman in her mid-twenties, took her own life. As unlikely as it was that the boys leaving her classroom had anything to do with her death, it nonetheless had a lasting effect on the young Mister Honeck’s life. A superior athlete, Kevin had little use for academics. He attributes the foundation of his education to the Sisters of Notre Dame. A later teacher, accomplished in letters would tell him if he wanted to write he must read incessantly. For many years after he would read nothing but established classics. O’Neill’s Land was his first foray into the novel.
